What is a Gas Chromatography

Gas chromatography is a powerful analytical technique used in various fields, including pharmaceuticals, environmental analysis, and forensic science. It separates and analyzes the components of a mixture based on their volatility and affinity for the stationary phase. The process involves injecting a vaporized sample onto a column packed with a stationary phase, such as polymers or silica gel. Then, an inert gas propels the sample through the column, allowing the different compounds to interact with the stationary phase at varying rates. As they pass through the column, these compounds separate into distinct peaks on a detector graph. Gas chromatography offers exceptional resolution and sensitivity, enabling the identification and quantification of trace amounts of various analytes within complex mixtures. Moreover, it allows for precise control over experimental parameters such as temperature and flow rate to optimize separation efficiency. This technique has revolutionized chemical analysis by providing highly reliable information crucial for research, quality control processes, and forensic investigations in professional settings.

 A gas chromatograph (GC) is an analytical instrument that measures the content of various components in a sample. The analysis performed by a gas chromatograph is called gas chromatography.

Principle of gas chromatography: The sample solution injected into the instrument enters a gas stream which transports the sample into a separation tube known as the "column." (Helium or nitrogen is used as the so-called carrier gas.) The various components are separated inside the column. The detector measures the quantity of the components that exit the column. To measure a sample with an unknown concentration, a standard sample with known concentration is injected into the instrument.
